Correction of lower eye bags: A Subtle Yet Profound Change

The correction of bags under the eyes (lower eyelid lift) is usually carried out on an outpatient basis in the day clinic in Zurich (Zollikon) and in Schaffhausen under local anaesthesia and sedation. Often the clearly visible, prominent fat pads that lead to the bags under the eyes and some skin have to be removed. The orbicularis oculi muscle, which is responsible for the formation of wrinkles and sometimes also for the formation of bulges, has to be tightened accordingly. If there is a tendency towards “sunken eyes”, no fat pads should be removed during the lower eyelid lift. In this case, the lower eyelid fat pads are transferred over the lower eyelid bone after mobilization and fixed to the bone. A lower eyelid lift is also achieved with this technique because the lower eyelid contours are smoothed by the fat transfer. Also very important is the release of the fibrous ligaments between the skin and orbital rim. Finally, a fine suture is placed and a bandage with steristrips is applied. The lower eyelid lift can be performed in one procedure together with the correction of the upper eyelid lift, but then increased lymphedema must be expected.

A lower eyelid lift can be part of a facelifting procedure or any other surgical procedure.

Reasons to Consider a Lower Eyelid Lift

It is the skin around the eyes that shows signs of aging at a faster rate than any other part of the body. As a person grows old, the lower eyelids droop, causing puffiness, dark circles, and a tired look. Usually, the causes are varied, but a combination of natural loss of skin elasticity with deposits of fatty materials, or weakening of muscle tone, among others, fulfills the requirement for this kind of sagging around the eyes.

The aim of a lower eyelid lift is to resolve all of these problems by removing excess skin, tightening stretched muscles, and redistributing fat. This procedure not only eliminates sagging and bags under the eyes but also restores smooth, youthful contours to the lower eyelid.

Whether due to a concern with aging or genetics, a lower eyelid lift can have a radically positive effect on the looks of the eye. The results are subtle but effectively restore a young and fresh appearance to the person who reflects youthful energy and vigor.

What are the benefits of blepharoplasty for finely contoured eyes?

1. Own muscle technique

I have developed my own technique for correcting drooping eyelids, in which I not only remove the excess skin, but also reduce the eye ring muscles and remove the fat pads. Only by removing these can a natural-looking and long-term beautiful result be achieved . However, reducing and tightening the eye ring muscles requires experience and is not an operation for beginners. Only by removing the eye ring muscles is a long-term rounding of the eyelid plate possible and guaranteed . Eyelid lifts in which only the eyelid skin without the muscles is removed are usually no longer visible after around 2 years and the affected patients are accordingly disappointed.

2. Removal of the orbicularis oculi muscle has no effect or consequence on the functions of the eye and closure function

I can reassure you that removing the orbicularis oculi muscle and tightening it has no effect on the closing function of the eyelid or any other function of the eye. But this step must be carried out so that the result of the drooping eyelid correction is long-lasting and permanen

3. Barely visible scar after drooping eyelid correction

Thanks to my special cutting technique, the so-called Flat Incision Technique (FIT), there are almost no visible scars on the face (barely visible).

4. Result is natural

Many of my patients come to me because they don’t want to look “operated on” or “cut” or “artificial”. I can take away this worry 100 percent. With me, you all look natural and not operated on. You just look fresh and have a beautiful eyelid again.

Droopy eyelid correction –
small procedure with big effect

Eyelid surgery is a straightforward procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis in our day clinic under local anesthesia. Intravenous medication may be provided to help you feel calm and relaxed.

After the procedure, you won’t feel ill but should take it easy for the first 24 hours and use cool packs to soothe your eyelids. From the second day, light activities such as walking the dog, office work, or working from home are perfectly fine. However, strenuous activities like using the sauna, mountain hiking, or going to the gym should be avoided. You can, and should, maintain normal hygiene starting from the first day after surgery.

After 7 days the stitches are removed and you can do everything again!

Lower Eyelid Lift: A Comprehensive Guide to Makeover

As time goes by, the delicate skin around our eyes starts to lose elasticity, resulting in droopy eyelids and under-eye bags. This change gives an exhausting and older appearance to one’s face. A lower eyelid lift, or lower blepharoplasty, is a beauty treatment intended to correct these aging manifestations by restoring brightness to the lower eyelid area. Subtle and effective, it refreshes and brings back a youthful look.

How It Works

A lower eyelid lift is focused on removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying muscles of the lower eyelids. This diminishes puffiness; reduces dark circles and removes eyebags, allowing one’s eyes to appear more well-rested. This procedure is usually performed with local anesthesia combined with sedation, making it a comfortable process throughout the operation.

There are different approaches to surgery depending on the needs of the patient and the surgeon’s recommendations. One of the common approaches is called the transconjunctival approach, during which the incision is made from inside the lower eyelid; hence, no visible scarring occurs. The eyelid lift is also indicated for those with excessive skin that has been excised; an incision will be made along the lash line and the healing can be hidden.

Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Ideal candidates for a lower eyelid lift would be those who are showing visual signs of aging around their eyes, such as sagging skin, puffiness, or dark circles.

1. Higher Form of Beauty

Remove the sleepy look from your eyes and restore your youth and vigor with a lower eyelid lift which, if done properly, will complement your facial features while making your eyes look larger, more open, and refreshed.

2. No/low Scarring

Apart from the hidden transconjunctival incision along the inside of the eyelid and Prof. Feinendegens the modern-day treatment leaves minimal scars, which usually heal and become less noticeable over time. If an incision is made along the lash line, this will also normally heal very nicely, fading naturally, providing yet another option.

3. Long Lasting Results

The result from an eyelid lift lasts many years. While a natural aging process continues, most patients are found to enjoy a more remodeled look for about ten years and sometimes even more.

4. Short Recovery Time

Recovery after a lower eyelid lift is quite rapid. There is swelling and bruising, which take from one to two weeks to subside. Most patients can return to work or social activities after seven to ten days, although heavy physical activity should be avoided for the first week.

What to Expect Before and After Surgery?

Before going ahead with the lower eyelid lift procedure, you will have a thorough consultation with Prof. Dominik L. Feinendegen. The purpose of this meeting is to evaluate your eye anatomy as well as discuss your desired aesthetic goals, and fully explain the procedure. You may have to refrain from taking various medications or supplements that could increase the likelihood of bleeding, and you must arrange for transport home.

After surgery, you will have a specific aftercare regimen to follow to allow for optimal healing. It is perfectly natural to experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the first couple of days.

Touching or rubbing your eyes should be avoided as it presents a risk of disruption of the incisions that could result in complications. Prof. Dominik L. Feinendegen will tell you when it is okay to return to normal activities, including putting on makeup.
